Qubole Reports Rapid Adoption of Its Self-Service Big Data Analytics Platform

The Amount of Data Processed on Qubole in 2014 Jumped More Than 1,400% Compared to the Year Prior

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - Feb 10, 2015) - Qubole, the big data-as-a-service company founded by the team that developed Facebook's data infrastructure, today reported rapid adoption of the Qubole Data Service (QDS) in 2014, with the amount of data processed on its platform soaring to well over a half an Exabyte last year compared to the year prior.

"2014 was a simply stunning year for the company. We saw growth both in new customer adoption as well as in expanded use within existing customers," said Ashish Thusoo, co-founder and CEO of Qubole. "While more companies are discovering the power of big data analytics, a great majority report hitting the wall in the cost and complexity of bare metal build of Hadoop and Spark in-house. That is the point at which many have been finding Qubole."

Qubole Data Service is a self-service platform for big data analytics that runs on the three major public clouds: Amazon AWS, Google Compute Engine and Microsoft Azure. Among its key advantages, QDS automatically sets up and scales up a cluster to match the needs of the particular job, and then winds down nodes when they're no longer needed. The QDS platform includes everything as a service, including Hive, Presto, MapReduce, Pig, Oozie and Sqoop.

Thusoo added, "With a turnkey big data solution provided on a choice of public clouds, we can get developers, data analysts, data scientists or other data users going immediately, complete with security features, an easy to use UI and built in data governance."

The company has a rapidly expanding list of customers as more enterprises look to the "as a service" option to accelerate their big data initiatives. Recent customer wins include DataLogix, Universal Music Group, Motion Picture Association of America and many others. These organizations are among the many customers using Qubole to derive more value out of their big data initiatives quickly and with no risk.

"By integrating Qubole into MediaMath's open data platform, our clients have gained access to seamless, scalable and on-demand analytics out of the box," said Dave Gavazzi, SVP of Product at MediaMath. "Qubole provides an essential tool for our clients who want to analyze massive datasets generated by the digital marketing campaigns they are running in MediaMath's TerminalOne™."

Key 2014 metrics
QDS processed 519 petabytes of data (the equivalent of more than 100 million full-length HD movies) in 2014, up from 34 petabytes in 2013. Qubole clients conducted more than 40.6 million compute hours on QDS in 2014. The average monthly compute hours grew nearly 350% to 5.7 million per month, while the number of individual active users on QDS grew 250% through the course of the year.

Most significantly, the average time to production from the time Qubole signs on a new customer was four days or less -- compared to up to 24 months to deploy on-premises solutions.

"Despite widespread interest in big data processing and analytics, many companies have taken longer than anticipated to move from tactical to strategic production deployments as it can be difficult to justify a large-scale investment in staff and systems to get big data projects off the ground without a clear understanding of what insight the data may yield," said Matt Aslett, research director, data platforms and analytics, 451 Research. "We anticipate growing interest in big data as a service offerings, such as Qubole's, that eliminate these risks and enable analysts to experiment with their data without up-front infrastructure investments."
